Living a sedate & peaceful life in a far flung outpost in the inner himalayas, the kashmiris were catapulted into the nineth century british india as a fallout from the anglo-russian rivalry. The change-over in 1846 from sikh to dogra rule under the suzerainty of the british, resulted in a socio-economic upheavel, particularly after 1889 when the british, after deposing the maharaja, assumed the administration of the state through the resident.they were responsible for the drastic overhaul of the administration machine, opening of the valley witha cart road linking srinagar to rawalpindi.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR P.N.K. Bamzai
P.N.K. Bamzai, born in 1910 in a Kashniri Pandit Family of scholarly traditions, received his first lessons in historical research from his father, Pandit Anand Koul who was the pioneer of modern research on the history and folklore of Kashmir. He got his degree from the Punjab University. His articles and papers pertaining to the history of Kashmir have been published in several journals in India and abroad. Besides writing several books on the subject, he has to his credit the monumental work, A History of Kashmir which carries a foreword by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. In 1954 he joined the Publications Division of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, as Editor of the illustrated Kashmir, which post he had graced for six years. He has been Editor of almost all the journals published by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India. Subsequently he was deputed by the Government of India to work as Adviser (Publication) to the Government of Ethiopia.
