India is a home of many religions, the present work covers only Hindu religion i.e., Hinduism. It is not easy to define Hinduism, for it is much more than a religion in the western sense. Hinduism is a conglomeration of religious, philosophical, and cultural ideas and practices that originated in India. Hinduism believes in three paths, three debts, four stages of life and four purposes in life. Hinduism is a way of life, a dharma. Dharma does not therefore mean religion; it is the law that governs all action. There is no "one Hinduism", and so it lacks any unified system of beliefs and ideas. Hinduism is a conglomerate of diverse beliefs and traditions. Hinduism is the dominant faith of India, practiced by over 80 per cent of the population and religion is a way of life in India. The book attempts to look at what are the basic premises of Hindu religion with help of various theoretical postulates. The role played by religion in the social life of a Hindu governing his social interaction; dietary habits, construction and layout of the house have also been dealt in the book. This book also contains the importance of deity worship which forms an integral part of Hindu religion. There are so many pilgrimage centres in our country (Tirtha’s) which link religion with economic and other socio-economic aspects of communities. The book touches upon various aspects of religion in Indian society. This book will find acceptance by academicians as well as the public alike. This book valuable will provide great help for researchers, and readers.
