Several factors are driving the need for businesses to integrate environmental issues with their business strategy. Improvement in the conditions of competitiveness is one of the main objectives of the business environment policy. Besides, a high standard of living, especially the safety of the citizens and a clean living environment, are integral parts of the welfare and business environment policy. On the other hand, external pressures such as regulations, policies and legislations in the interest of public as well as market opportunities arising from environmental concerns, have compelled firms to integrate environmental issues with their strategic planning process. Shareholders, customers and policymakers are also increasingly demanding improved environmental performance from business firms all over the world. Corporate is, therefore, paying greater attention to the environmental impact of its business activity. In Indian industry, the importance of accounting environmental issues, while planning business strategies, has become crucial. Hence, broad insights and knowledge into environmental regulation, legislation, policies and experience of the Indian industry would enrich the capabilities of Indian business houses and corporate professionals to effectively manage and integrate environmental issues with their business strategies, afterall environment and economy are twin partners in the pursuit of quality existence.

Naveen Kumar holds a M.Phil. degree from Department of Business Economics, University of Delhi, Delhi. He is presently working as a Faculty Associate with Icfai Research Centre, Hyderabad. He has around seven years of research experience in the field of social sciences. He has been awarded fellowship for Doctoral Programme in 2003 from National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) North-South, Switzerland (a joint project of Swiss National Science Foundation and Swiss Agency for Corporation and Development). V.V. Ramani holds an M.A., Phil and a PGDM from Madras University. She is currently working as a Faculty Member and Consulting Editor with ICFAI University. She has over 18 years of industry and academic experience. She is the Joint Secretary of National Human Resources Development Network, Hyderabad Chapter and Vice President of CEASE Child Labor (an ILO Project). Her articles have been published in various magazines and management journals. She presented several papers in various conferences and seminars.
