The Geet-Govindam translates literally into ‘The Song of Govinda’. Govinda is another name for Krishna,. Radha, the gopi queen, catches Krishna in the armorous embrace of another belle. She is hurt, angered. When Krishna comes to beg forgiveness, she chastises him with bitter words. Yet she is miserable when he leaves in dejection. How he comes back and seeks her grace on bent knees is the subject of this intensely sweet love poem. Jayadev, ONE OF THE GREAT CLASSICAL Sanskrit poets lived in Bengal around 1200 AD. His songs in praise of the Lord are cited even today for their eloquent grace and rhythm.
