In the the following pages my aim has been to sketch the development of criticism, and particularly of critical methods, in England; and to illustrate each phase of its growth by one or two samples taken from the most typical writers.
This book aims to provide a general outline of English literature for students in colleges and universities and others beyond the high school age. The first purposes of every such book must be to outline the development of the literature with due regard to national life, and to give appreciative interpretation of the work of the most important authors.

In proportion, as we approach the living or, worse, speak of those still on earth, the proper perspective is lost and the dangers of contemporary judgement incurred. The light-minded might add, that the dead can not strike back; to pass judgement upon them is not only more critical but safer.
