Born of a Scottish father and mother of a Sikkimese descent, the author spent the early years of his life in Darjeeling and had his schooling there in the course of which he ultimately mastered Tibetan, Bengali, Bhutanese, Sikkimese, Lepcha, Hindi and Nepali.
