The earliest attempt to elucidate the microscopic nature of Gondwana and Tertiary coals of India was made in 1926, in thin sections, prepared abroad. Terminology and nomenclature of the micro-constituents of coal was not attempted. Another effort was made in 1932, to the study of coals of the country, in Germany.
