This book is Roys unpublished doctoral dissertation completed in 1988. Since his sudden death in Columbia University, USA in 2002, it was languishing in New Delhi till an intrepid admirer rescued it from the groves of the academic unknown, it has been our effort to resurrect the findings and present it to the world as another analysis of an important epoch in the history of India.
