The dictionary includes brief description of medicinal herbs used in alternative systems of healing. The plants have been arranged alphabetically and families, names, parts used, chemistry and medicinal use discussed. Formulations prepared from medicinal plants used in Indian system of medicine have been included. The salient feature of the dictionary is a brief account of pharmacological studies on plants extracts and constituents isolated from them. At the end of the text, five annexures have been included explaining: Investigative work done on some medicinal plants; Standardized herbal extracts prepared from some medicinal herbs; List of phytochemicals; List of recently studied plant based drugs with actions and Drugs of controversial origin used in Ayurveda.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR A.P. Singh
Dr. Ajai Pal Singh was born in 1933 in the village Paharipur, Jankhat, District Farrukhabad, U.P. He completed his high school and Intermediate from D.N. College Tirwa Farrukhabad, He graduated in Science from Allahabad University. He took his M.A. Degree in Ancient History from Vikram University, Ujjain and completed his post graduate diploma in Museology from Bhopal University, Bhopal. He was awarded Ph.D degree from Bhopal University. Besides the books "Conservation and Museum Techniques' "Fort and Fortification of India" "Defensive art of India" "Monuments of Orchha" and "Monuments of Mandu" Dr. Singh has contributed a good number of research papers to various reputed journals.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR A.S. Sandhu
Arminder Singh Sandhu (b. 1960) completed his postgraduate studies in Botany from Punjab University, Chandigarh. At present, he is working as medicinal Plant Garden Incharge in Department of Natural Product, national Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Mohali. He has eight years of experience in taxonomy, propagation and field work in medicinal plants.
