China and India have been friendly and neighbourly nations for more than two thousand years. The culture and social traditions of both the two countries has mutually influenced each other for more than two millennium and we do not find any parallel of this kind in the history of mankind. In spite of the great significance of the Buddhist brotherhood between the two nations, the cultural, religious and social contacts between the two nations have been hitherto not explored significantly through the Chinese sources. The author, who is a well-known China-hand and has excellent mastery on mandarin, has researched the contours of cultural and social contacts between the two nations through the original Chinese sources and has cited many original Chinese sources and has cited many original Chinese literatures in this tome. This book is the result of the author’s effort to research the cultural and social interface between the two nations every century wise. The present volume, the first in the series of the books on "Sino-Indian Relations" deals the contacts between the two countries from first century to seventh century, which can be termed as the golden period of Sino-Indian brotherly relation. The author wishes that the policy makers, scholars, academicians and common men of both the countries could fathom the deep and rich spiritual and material contact between the two nations, draw an inspiration from it and further strengthen the growing relationship between the two countries in future. The book is not only meant for the scholars and academicians of Sino-Indian studies but for also generating interest in Sino-Indian relation among the common mass of both the countries in particular and among the whole humankind in general in the entire world.
