English literature has traversed many stages down from Romanticism to Victorian, Edwardian and modernism. Modernist literature grew out of a great disillusionment with attitudes of certainty, consercatism and objective truth of early periods. Although literary modernism reached its peak during the world wars, the earliest examples appeared in the mid to late nineteenth century. Post-modernist literature arose after World War II as a reaction against the perceived failure or extension of modernist literature.
