Tripura is ranked among of most ancient princely states of eastern India. The Administration Reports –as published annually by the Tripura Durbar to meet the demands of modernized from of administration- is an important original source of history. But due to the non-availability to the Reportsa and dearth of Various other original source materials, the scholars had to depends so long on secondary sources for having some idea about the princely state and its people. With the publication of the present book the long-felt demand of the research workers will be met. Dr. Mahadev Chakravarti took upon himself the stupendous task of collecting from different sources these fading source materials and editing the whole publishing project. All the four volumes would open before readers the floodgates of information about princely Tripura and its people. Over and above the information-packed Editor’s Note in each volume and some more important documents in the appendices, there are (in Vol. 1 six Administration Reports (1902-10 A.D.) along with a glossary); (in Vol. II nine Administration Reports (From 1911 A.D. to 1921 A.D.); (in Vol. III seven Administration Reports (from 1923 A.D. to 1931 A.D.); (in Vol. IV seven Administration Reports since 1932 A.D.) In the Administration Reports there are chapters on general and political situations, nature of land administration, police, justice, prisons, municipality, weather and crops, agriculture, condition of the people, immigration and emigration, forest wealth, trade and manufacture, educational scenario, public works, revenues and finance, post office, the Chakla Roshnabad zemindaries, the estates in Sylhet, etc. In the Statical Retums as printed at the end of each annual Report, there are tables on various aspects of princely Tripura. The Administration Reports –as include in the above four volumes- would provide ample official materials to prepare a complete history of the erstwhile princely state, including medical history, meteorological history, judicial history, economics, political or administrative history, of criminology and so on.
