After Tagore is a vibrant book by one of the most powerful living American poets. Here Ray conjures the magic of his master Tagore and brings alive the forgotten fragrances of the Indian landscape to his readers worldwide. Instead of sticking to traditional translations, Ray explores, elaborates, transposes and engages his own thought in dialogue with those of Tagore to celebrate the elemental simplicity of human endeavors, telling people to look away from the clokc and the calender and throw away their wristwatches and other hidden watches… "Why. should they be proud,/thought," Ray writers" of being the species that has answered every weapon on earth with a clock/even their own beloved atomic time bombs." Richard Eberhart had this to say of Ray's earlier poems on India: "David Ray's depictions and evaluations of Indian life are enthralling.. a full-scale poetic achievement."
