The present study is an attempt to examine the different pushes and pulls in the relationship between the United States and India during a crucial decade (1962-1972). In this decade, most of the global issues continued to be more or less interconnected. Even bilateral relations between countries were governed by issues that were extraneous in the bilateral context. The global order tended to be increasingly multi-polar. Relations between countries were determined by the overall global power contest among the big powers. Being as assessment of relations between the United States, a super power, and India, the foremost non-aligned and South Asian regional power, the present study attempts to examine both the global and South Asian settings in which the relationship took shape. The author attempts to show that the national interests of the two countries, as they identified them, more than any thing else, determined their mutual relations. Depending on convergence or divergence of their national interests, American and Indian policies turned out to be identical or opposite. This study analyses the relations between the two countries in this context. This well-documented book should be of interest to students, researchers, policy-makers and the reading public.
