The ABCFM missionaries of the Jaffna Mission from Sri Lanka established the American Madura Mission (AMM) at Madurai in 1834. The book is on the services rendered by American Missionaries at Madurai (1834-1934). It is a discussion of the socio-cultural background at the time of arrival of the missionaries, the early European missions and advent of American missionaries in India. It studies their use of educational, medical and social services to spread Gospel trying to win over the different categories of deprived sections. It explains that they gave the power and responsibilities to the native Christians hoping that the purpose for which they cam would be followed by the natives. Involving perusal of annual reports and letters of missionaries, it points out that the AMM placed emphasis on development and conversion in rural areas and developed new social trends especially in relation to caste.
