The second chapter deals with the history from ancient times till the present-day. Chapter 3 deals with the Hydrological cycle of water wherein, it is explained how the resource, which is constant in quantity, cycles from earth to heaven and back to earth. Chapter 4 deals with microscopic organisms that live in water and their influence on the health of humans. Chapter 5 deals with various chemical contaminants that enter into water and affect the health of humans. Chapter 6 deals with contamination due to radio active material. Chapter 7 deals with the toxic contaminants and their influence. Chapters 8 and 9 deal with the quality of water, standards and measurements. These chapters also explain the various adverse effects on humans and their permissible limits. Chapter 10 deals with various environmental effects related to water. Chapter 11 deals in brief with the various treatment options available to render water and waste waters fit for humans and other users. Chapter 12 deals with the problems of stagnant water bodies, in brief, and their eutrophication.

S V Rao is presently working as a consultant, after retirement as Engineer-in-Chief of PH & ME Department of the Government of AP, India. His fields of specialization are the Environmental studies, formulation, design and estimation of Urban Engineering Services. He holds Public Health Engineering Post Graduation Degree from the All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health, Calcutta and a Doctorate in Civil Engineering from Andhra University, Vishakapatnam. He earlier worked as a Consultant for Kinhill Engineers, Australia and Sverdrup Civil Inc. of USA, while their offices were at Hyderabad. He worked as Member Secretary, Pollution Control Board of Andhra Pradesh and Engineer-in-Chief Public Health & Municipal Engineering Department of Government of Andhra Pradesh. He is involved in several environmental studies and in issuing no objection certificates for medium and major industries of Andhra Pradesh. He encouraged pollution control systems in medium, major and other polluting industries of Andhra Pradesh. He encouraged involvement of many NGO groups, women and children in pollution control and awareness activities. He also encouraged and involved personally in heavy plantation in industrial and municipal areas. He conducted several training programmes and seminars in industries and Municipal areas. He was the local chairman for IWWA of Hyderabad centre. He was involved in designing and execution of 50 water supply schemes in the Municipal towns of Andhra Pradesh, which included all major towns of AP. He has 45 years of experience in water and wastewater services and other Urban Infrastructure services. He also worked for all major Urban Development Authorities of AP, and developed several residential colonies with Urban Services.
