The bricks are known to us since the dawn of human activity in India. The remains of brick monuments helped towards a proper understanding and appreciation of the life and spirit of ancient Indian people and at the same time, it has also contributed to bring up new suggestion regarding the origin of Indian civilization. The discovery of the pre-Indus civilization at Mehrgarh has pushed back the history of Indian civilization to the period Circa 6000 B.C. to 4500 B.C. with probabilities of its being even earlier to it. The continuity of archaeologically known tradition right from the pre-Indus period down to the PGW – NBPW and its proliference being more and more reliable in historic period. Takes us up to the later times, ending in the Gupta and Post – Gupta periods. These instances indicate that there was not any thorough break after the Indus valley civilization, the products of the intermediate period still lie hidden under the earth or have vanished without leaving any trace being made of perishable materials. But literary evidences leave no doubt that the activities continued during the intervening period.
