Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things: A Critical Appraisal

The book is a modest attempt to evaluate the various aspects of Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things, the Booker Prize winner book. The book opens with a brief introduction of the life, mind and art of the author. The following chapters critically analyse the general concept of noel, its meaning, origin and scope. Some chapters are devoted to the theme and attitude of the author. They show beautifully the author’s sympathetic attitude to the weak and the vulnerable, who are brutally and mercilessly persecuted by the big guns of the so called aristocratic and hypocrite society. One of the chapters attempts to dive deep into the psyches of some of the neurotic characters of the book and tries to evaluate the characters on the basis of the psychological principles. The chapter related to style and structure contains so many things of Roy’s poetic creativity e.g., architectonic method, extraordinary linguistic inventiveness, the metaphorical exuberences etc. The book, I hope, will certainly prove to be a great asset for all those teachers, scholars and students who want to be fully acquainted with Arundhati roy’s matter and manner.
