Aspects of Geology and Environment of the Himalaya contains 26 research papers written by experts and is the outcome of a National Seminar organized by the Department of Geology, Kumaun University Nainital. The volume dwells on complexities of the regional geology of the Himalaya, its magmatic and metamorphic history, tectonics, contemporary environmental issues viz., glacial recession, landslides and erosion, neotectonics, quaternary fluvio-glacial lacustrine profiles and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction, geohydrology and rainwater harvesting including some aspects of forest management and forest fires. The contributions range in scope from local case studies to aspects of regional dimension. It may be emphasized that such studies are very significant for understanding the dimension of the problem and futuristic modelling. This is amply and aptly supported by the case studies described here. The editors hope that the book will be useful to Himalaya geologists, environmentalists, researchers, resource managers, planners, decision makers, students and those interested in the development of environmentally degraded regions of the world.
