The ‘Atlas of Indian Hardwoods’ has been prepared to present photomicrographs of all three sections of wood of hardwood species viz. transverse, radial-longitudinal and tangential-longitudinal to help its readers in recognizing and matching the wood structure. The anatomical features codes, as per the feature list given by International Association of Wood Anatomist (IAWA, 1989) describing 221 features have been associated with the photomicrographs of each species. These anatomical features shall help the researchers to understand various wood anatomical features and utilize them in various wood structure research and identification of Indian hardwoods. The book has been designed for hardwoods only because the softwoods diversity is less in India and a very few of them are commercially exploitable. Also, the softwoods are well compiled in a book (Chauhan et al, 1996) that can be referred for their identification. This book is the outcome of the database prepared for ‘Wood Anatomy Information System (WAIS)’, a computer package from India for wood research and identification (Gupta et al, 2001, 2002). The first volume contains 347 species covering 137 genera and 36 families from Aceraceae to Ericaceae.
