Sri Lanka is one of the most bio-diverse countries in the world. Including residents, migrants, vagrants and others, it has on record over 450 species of birds, and thus described as a ‘birding jewel in Asia’. Aimed at stimulating an interest in Sri Lankan birds amongst a wide global audience, this nicely produced book is a splendid introduction to a wide cross section of bird species found on the island. The species have been chosen to illustrate a good spread of families. Species descriptions include details such as distribution, interesting behaviour, differences between the sexes, vocalizations, field characteristics, etc. Written in an engaging style, but without sacrificing scientific accuracy, the book is lavishly illustrated through colour images and has many value added features including glossary of terms, list of endemic birds and references to relevant literature.
