Bombay Cinema: An Archive of the City

Bombay Cinema attempts to situate the city within a set of related practices and discourses that in turn have influenced the way the cinema has represented and archived the urban experience in India. In this century of cinema, the city can hardly be understood without taking cognizance of the visual world. Entering the world of the cinematic and the urban experience through a form of engagement that is markedly interdisciplinary, this book attempts to indicate how other readings can be drawn upon to push the possibilities of popular Bombay cinema. By illustrating cinema’s ability to surprise us with its mediation on everyday life and experience, Bombay Cinema can contribute to our collective and ongoing effort to understand the complex texture of modernity as it unfolds in the space of metropolitan India.
