This research monograph seeks to make a comprehensive and indepth study of all important aspects of the administration of Punjab covering the period from 1897 to 1919. this period is highly significant in the administrative history of the province. In 1897-Legislative Council was established in Punjab followed by changes and reforms of great consequence in the general structure of administration, local self-government, administration of justice, police and jails, agrarian system, public works and education. What is equally important is that people’s response to and reaction against the various administrative measures taken by the British authorities was strongly expressed through press and platform and this gave a stimulus to the growth of militant nationalism against the colonial rule in the province. This study makes a comprehensive and critical analysis of all these developments. No effort has been spared to present the subject – matter in as objective and dispassionate manner as possible. Based largely on the primary sources available in the National Archives of India, and the Punjab State Archives, this book is likely to prove immensely beneficial to the students and scholars who are interested in the study of colonial administration of the Punjab.
