The first volume begins with the brief introduction of the physical and geographical features of the land besides India’s early political history ad describes elaborately the trade activities of the Company, which in due course of time became settlers and colonialists and expansionist in Indian soil till 1`857. The first phase of the British Rule in India came to an end in 19858 and a new era of direct control of British Crown began with the proclamation by the Governor General Lord canning on Nov. 1, 1888.
