Broken Mirrors offers a compelling insight into the sub-text of the ‘dowry deaths’ in India. Based on interviews conducted over a year of intensive fieldwork in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, the book takes the reader right into the intimate worlds of not just the complainants but also the defendants.
The case studies each presented in a unique and fresh manner examine issues of power struggle, marital expectations, values, roles and financial expectations within a patriarchal structure as the root cause of most of the problems related to marriage. They illustrate that the legal framework of India is also partly responsible for marital violence, and suggest that only pro-women, anti-dowry laws can lead to some sort of remedy.
