This book aims to trace the evolution and chronological development of Buddhism in Kashmir. Based on the archaeological evidence and literary data, it describes in detail the introduction of Buddhism in Kashmir during the reign of King Ashoka and its spread in Ladakh, Dardistan and Gilgit.
Further, it discusses at length the important tenets of Sarvastivada sect of Buddhism and its subsequent decline in Kashmir. It also examines the incorporation and subordination of the Buddha within the Brahmanical cult of Vishnu and his replacement as the Cosmic-Man within the mythic ideology of Indian kingship. A discussion on Hiuen Tsiang’s visit to Kashmir finds place in the book as well.
