ABOUT THE AUTHOR Makrand Mehta

The author is Professor and Head of Department of History, School of Social Sciences, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad (India). Dr. Makrand Mehta is associated with a number of professional organizations. He was President of Modern Indian of the Indian History Congress (1987) and thereafter, President of the Gujarat ltihas Parishad (1988 and 1989). Makrand Mehta received his education at the M.S. University of Baroda (India), University of Pennsylvania (U.S.A), and Gujarat University. Dr. Mehta is a pains-taking writer and has contributed a number of papers on social and economic history. His books include The Ahmedabad Cotton Textile Industry Genesis and Growth (1982); Urbanization in Western India : A Historical Perspective, ed. (1988); Business Houses in Western India : A Study in Entrepreneurial Response 1850-1956, co-authored (1990); and Regional Roots of Indian Nationalism, ed. (1990).
