The book Catalogue of Archaeological Sites in Tamil Nadu seeks to update our knowledge on archaeological sites of Tamil Nadu in the light of intensive archaeological explorations and excavations undertaken by various institutions and individual scholars for the past three decades. Nearly 2000 archaeological sites find its place. The introductory chapters provide a kaleidoscopic view on the nature of cultural process that undergone in the long span of human life. The micro level maps are self-explanatory and educative. The maps give a good amount of knowledge on emergence and re-emergence of settlement patterns. Some of the rare photographs taken during the course of explorations find their place. The district wise alphabetical list of sites with site index at the end became handy for any scholars or students who intended to do serious research. The rich data embedded in the volume may invoke interest among the scholars and can be expected to open further avenues of research.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR K Rajan
K.Rajan, Professor and Head, Department of History, Pondicherry University, Pondicherry is graduated from University of Madras and holds Post Graduate Diploma from Institute of Archaeology and Ph.D from Mysore University. During his tenure as a Technical Officer in National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, He actively participated both in Marine Archaeological Explorations and in land excavations at Dwarka, Poompuhar, Ramapuram, Periyapattinam, Kodumanal, Mayiladumparai and Thandikudi. He discovered more than thousand archaeological sites in Tamil Nadu. He has completed more than fifteen research projects funded by UGC, INSA, ICHR, CIIL and Ford Foundation. He is the Visiting Fellow of the Cambridge University, University College London, Gakushuin University, Tokyo and Maison des Sciences de L’ Homme and Sorbonne University, Paris. He has eight books and more than sixty research papers to his credit.

S.Selvakumar, Research Scholar, Department of History, Pondicherry University, Pondicherry, is graduated from Sri Vasavi College, Erode. He completed Archaeology of Namakkal Region for his M.Phil programme and presently doing research on Historical Geography of Tamil Nadu 1300 to 1600 AD.
