The Harisingh Gour Archaeological Museum of Sagar University is one of the best museums in Madhya Pradesh and has a rare collection of sculptures and antiquities. The sculptural collection of the museum, numbering 501 items, comprises sculpture not only from Sagar District, but also from other important sites in the neighbouring region. A complete list of the sculptures exhibited at the museum is given in the Catalogue along with other necessary details.
The Introduction to the Catalogue highlights the history of the museum, as well as the importance of the art of Madhya Pradesh and Sagar; it also gives a general description of the collections at the museum, including archaeological material found at various excavations and explorations, coins, seals, inscriptions, paintings and terracotta works.
The most important part of the Catalogue is a detailed study of 45 selected sculptures. Some of these, for example, Nrvaraha, Nrsimha, Gajalaksmi, Ardhanarisvara, Dvarapala, Harihara-Hiranyagarbha, Parvati, Indrani, Sivagana, etc. are worth mentioning both as sculptures in the collection, and furthermore, as the pride and joy of the museum. Their vivid iconographic features are described here for the first time.
