The Census of India has in its repertoire an impressive collection of monographs that capture different facets of India and its people-demographic, economic, social and cultural. The present publication is an addition to this treasure trove. This is the first in a series of publications that aims to list the temples in each District of Tamil Nadu. This survey has listed 3818 temples in the District of Kancheepuram. The greatest strength of the publication is its coverage–each and every village and town in the district has been covered. Exquisite colour photographs embellish the narrative. In order to retain the local flavour, the textual content is by and large based on local enquiry and has been reproduced as such without any attempt to validate it. The publication is aimed at a lay reader and therefore the presentation is at a very basic level. The purpose is to present a panoramic view of the glorious cultural heritage of India
