The present study offers an assessment of security concerns in Central Asia after the collapse of Soviet Union in 1991. It deals with the transition period for the five Central Asian states from the communist system to a democratic and pluralistic one. Essentially, the focus of the writer is on bilateral, multilateral and international commitments of these states to ensure peace and security in the region. The withdrawal of nuclear warheads from Kazakhstan, collective security formula, bilateral agreements and the role of the big powers – all make an interesting study. The author has discussed these concerns in the context of the stance of neighbouring states vis-?-vis Central Asia. Economic interests also figure wherever necessary. This work is highly useful to those who would like to concentrate on any aspect of history in Central Asia and adjoining regions in the post-Soviet period.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Tabasum Firdous
Tabasum Firdous, born in Srinagar, did M.A. in Political Science from Kashmir University in 1985, M. Phil in 1987 and Ph.D. in 1993 from the Centre of Central Asian Studies, Kashmir University. Her doctoral thesis is titled 'Imperialism and Neo-Colonialism in Iran: 1945 to 1970'. Appointed as Lecturer in International Relations in the Centre of Central Asian Studies of Kashmir University in 1993, she continues her academic pursuits till date. Besides participating in a number of national and international seminars, she has published as many as ten research papers in different journals some of which are : 'Central Asia: Seucrity Stakes and Strategies' (World Affairs, June 1995), 'Afghanistan: An Update of Current Situation' (Asian Commentary, September 1991), 'Afghanistan under the Taliban' (Asian Commentary, March 2000), 'The Melting Pot of Tajikistan' (Central Asian Journal, 1998), 'Force Structure in CIS' (Newsletter, 1997), 'Kashmir Towards Economic Reconstruction' (New Hope, August 2000) and 'Kashmir on the Crossroad of Past and Future' (Kashmir Monitor, August 2000).
