The eradication of poverty is a millennium challenge for the developing world. The choice of policy to remove the scourge of poverty requires the understanding of its various dimensions. The economists from the classical era to the present, have debated this phenomena and there is a wide variation of perspectives among the economists and policy-makers on the issues related to the elimination of poverty. The author presents a survey of these diverse perspectives on poverty and analyses how the development experience during last five decades relate to these perspectives. The book captures the changing face of poverty and brings to focus the experience of countries who succeeded in alleviating poverty. The book in its analysis lays special emphasis on those developing countries where poverty has persisted and where very low rate of economic growth has not been effective enough to make a dent in poverty.
