The present compilation constitutes a trilogy under three specific heads-the social context of child development, its policies and dynamics and experiences and experiments in both Indian and foreign context. The necessity of government intervention in this crucial area of national development can never be over-estimated. Yet in spite of the well thought out programmes and action plans, along with very substantial financial outlays under the Five Year Plans, many deficiencies and shortfalls have been pointed out. The role of voluntary agencies in the three vital segments, namely, nutrition, health and education, has been of prime significance. The papers, articles, excerpts and reviews are from both published and unpublished sources. The prime objective is to provide a broad-spectrum view of the nature and substance of children’s development activities since the Year of the Child. As such, it is hoped that both individually as well as collectively the following volumes will provide and open a wide window onto the larger landscape of children and child development policies and initiatives.
