This research is undertaken with the assistance of UNICEF and Canada to study the needs & problems of school age children with disabilities in the Island of K. Villingilli, Maldives and to determine whether they can be accommodated in the existing general education systems. The World Programme of Action concerning Disabled Persons and the Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Disability envisages a need for relevant data base for disability sector to be used for disability sector to be used in the development and implementation of appropriate policy and programmes and their monitoring and evaluation for the education and employment of persons with disabilities. The ministry of Gender, Family Development and Social Security, Maldives has taken the initiative to fulfill the government’s obligation under the said Programme of Action and Standard Rules and government policies to protect the rights of disabled people and to establish a national system to provide assistance to people with disabilities in 2003. This time UNICEF wanted Care. Society to take up a simple survey of school-age disabled children in the Island of K. Villinglli to study the status of disable children with a view to know their needs and problems and ultimately to mainstream them in the existing general education system.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Janak Verma
Dr. Janak Verma is a Professor in the Department of Education of Group with Special Needs, National Council of Education Research and Training, (NCERT), New Delhi. Having done Post graduation and also have Ph.D. in Psychology. She has specialization in special education. She has thirty six years of experience in different capacities in the field of education, psychology and inclusive education in NCERT. She is closely associated with international agencies like UNICEF, UNESCO & SIDA and has completed number of national and international projects. She has experience of working in slums, rural and remote areas with special needs children, teachers, and teacher educators. She is involved in planning, management monitoring and evaluation of various projects assisted by different international agencies. A number of publications are these to her credit in national and international journals. She represented the country in JAPAN, where she presented a country paper on policies and Measures including future plans for utilization of ICT for education of children with disabilities during 2003. Her area of interest in Psychology, Education and Special Education is well known.
