Class and Caste in Literature

African-Americans and Indian untouchables are an oppressed lot miserably entangled in the obnoxious web of racial discrimination and caste prejudice, respectively. Though slavery ended because of Civil War in 1861, segregation based on colour still continues in America. The grim plight of untouchable also still continues in India, despite the constitutional measures taken by the Indian government. However, both the issues are thrashed out analytically in this book in perspective of human predicament. The volume discusses two significant novels, namely Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Mulk Raj Anand’s Untouchable in a comparative framework. The book purports to make a rich contribution to the fast-growing corpus of literature on the marginalized.
