The first edition of this book (1991) is now an established core text for courses on development communication throughout the world. This completely revised edition builds on the framework provided by the earlier text. It traces the history of development communication, presents and critiques diverse approaches and their proponents, and provides ideas and models for development communication in the new century. The underlying goals of the book are: To Critique the power of dominant knowledge systems; To challenge the truth claims of modernism; and To sensitize the reader to the relationship between dominant knowledge and the exercise of social power. In contrast to the first edition which was organized historically, the second edition is organized conceptually. Part I provides an overview of the evolution of the theory and practice of development communication. Part II focuses on development discourse, modernization theory, and communication under modernization. The third part presents critical perspectives on communication and development. The next section discusses liberation perspectives on development, while the last section focuses on communication and development and argues for communication strategies for empowerment. Among the other important features of the new edition are: It is based on the latest literature in the field, It encompasses contributions from postmodernism, feminism, the environmental discourse, and postcolonial studies, It critically examines the discourse on modernization and development theory and practice in the developing world, It is interdisciplinary in its approach drawing from political science, economics, sociology, social psychology, social work, education, and women’s studies. Thoroughly revised to meet the needs of current courses on development communication, mass communication, and media studies, it will also be of interest to students and scholars of development studies and journalism, and to non-governmental organizations.
