Computerization tends to divert more money into equipment than formerly occurred, and as we become more dependent on on-line access from multiple consoles this will be come increasingly the case. As we move into micro-computers, where obsole-scence is a daily rather than an annual fact, even more money will have to go into equipment replacement, and nothing short of short-term contracts at a fixed annual price on a lease purchase basis will be practical. A final factor in the library budget is the competition generated against it on academic campuses by the computational computer centre that serves faculty information needs.
