The research articles in the volume throw light on various aspects of Indian society and culture with particular attention to trends of democratisation in society, status of women and their empowerment, crime in society and developmental programmes taking into account development of the tribals, concerns of environmental degradation and the state of poverty. Taking into account government policies; international reports including those of world organisations like the International Labour Organisation, the UNDP and the World Bank; and court judgements in India, they examine the impact of government programmes and initiatives such as the farm forestry programme for tribal development and the ‘Integrated Action Plan’ for combating the menace of Naxalism. They also present different perspectives on women’s development and feminism.
