The Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla organised a seminar to commemorate the golden jubilee of India’s independence in 1997. The Gandhigram Trust, Gandhigram and the Gandhigram Rural Institute, Gandhigram, were the co-organisers of this seminar. The present volume is a an outcome of this seminar which explores issues like the meaning of an India, the essence of Indian nation, degeneration and regeneration of the institutions, liberalism and common good, the role of teachers and education for twenty-first century, the value and purpose of education, information, technological issues, Gandhian agenda, the industrial and agrarian problems, Indian womanhood, Indian identity, etc. These penetrating insights into various issues of the Indian identity will be welcomed by all those interested in the destiny of India.
