In modern welfare states, the aim of the Government is to provide good governance. But, corruption on the part of policymakers and government officials is a great hindrance in achieving good governance. In fact, corruption reigns supreme everywhere, including private sector. This hydra-headed concept has brought irreparable damage to both society and economy of a majority of nations, and is now threatening to engulf the world completely. It is true that corruption is ubiquitous, but that should not be an excuse for indulging in corrupt practices. Corruption has put the governance of countries in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) – paralyzed in almost every front. It has caused moral degradation of the people, and as a result austerity and frugality of the previous years have now been transferred into ostentation and flamboyance. On the economic front, corruption is quite visible in the form of bribe in investment proposals, tax evasion, greasing the palm in petty business transactions etc, resulting in zero development or underdevelopment. Under such circumstances, can something be not done to counteract this malady, which has become a menace for economic development? The remedies to this malady definitely exist. Beginning with an attitudinal reform, a whole-hearted approach is required to combat corruption. This book is an attempt to illustrate the combating strategies to fight corruption, in addition to its causes and consequences.
