This book tells the story of the network which pioneered the two smallest gauges of railways in India, known as the narrow gauges. It was in 1862 that the first narrow gauge line was built from Dabhoi—a small town in Vadodara district of the Gujarat state, to Miyagam—another town located between Vadodara and Bharuch. A painstakingly carried out research work that draws upon a variety of archival and other contemporary literary works and documents—the book not only documents the construction and development of this line, but also tries to provide deep insights into the related economic and political issues, besides illustrating how the interests of the Britian were served by this railway line. A compilation of rare maps, photographs, letters, documents, and time tables in the form of appendix, select bibliography and an exhaustive subject index are other highlights of the book.
