Explaining the concept of ‘decent work’ developed by the International Labour Organisation, the work presents a consolidated and encompassing guide to the underlying philosophy of the concept and the theory of decent work paradigm. It is an empirical study of the current status of decent work in the Information Technology industry of India adopting a pragmatic method vis-à-vis the measurement of decent work. It argues that decent work involves provision of productive work opportunities to men and women in conditions of equity, freedom, security and dignity, its aim being to create better jobs in the global economy without imposing burdens on those who work. It takes up questions relating to jobs in the IT industry being conducive for the well-being of its employees, the effect of computers on the health of the employees and impact of longer working hours on personal lives.
