Defence Policy of India

India has seldom invoked the ‘Defence Policy’ as a distinct structured process. Defence Policy is shaping out of Governmental assessment and option to various emerging state-of-affairs. The present mode of Defence policy has emerged out of individual philosophy of national leaders or a political ideologies of ruling parties. This book has tried to piece together the offshoots of foreign, economic and internal security policy into a National Defence Policy. The pronouncements by Government at the time of threats to nation, later transformed into foundations of present day Defence Policy. Interpretation and bottlenecks of the National Defence Policy of India, are analysed. Indian concept about national defence policy and security perception has never been clear. Now, India desire a role in international security arrangements and she would not tolrate any third party intervention in her internal affairs. The independent foreign policy is hallmark of our decision making, that led the nation successfully through pre and post cold war. However, effective foreign policy demands strong economy and robust defence to succeed. At last but not least a holistic framework of defence policy is presented.
