Tribals comprise an appreciable component of the autochthonous population in India, constituting about one-tenth of the total population: the country is not, of course, homogenous in regard to the proportion or the composition of the tribal population. In 1991, about one-fifth of the people in the (new) State of Madhya Pradesh were tribals, numbering 10 million, larger than in any other state in India. This admirably produced collection of studies, entitled "Demography and Health Profile of the Tribals of Madhya Pradesh", edited by Dipak K. Adak, Biswanath Bhattacharya, Rohini Ghosh, Manoranjan Pal, Premananda Bharati, and T.S. Vasulu at the Anthropological Survey of India and Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata, attempts to answer some of the questions. The studies are based on large-scale survey data, relating to tribals in the region, and also case study and focus group types of data in some specific parts of the region. Professor Biswanath Bhattacharya is a profound scholar of Sanskrit and Bengali Literatures and an original thinker in the field of Sanskrit Poetics and Dramaturgy. He has studied Sanskrit Literature and Poetics from both the traditional and modern systems. He is one of the senior professors of Sanskrit in the Banaras Hindu University.

Dr. Dipak Kumar Adak (b.1965) passed M.Sc. in Anthropology with spcialization in Physical Anthropology from Dr.H.S.Gour University. He obtained Ph.D. degree from University of Gauhati and M.P.S. degree from International Institute for Populations Sciences, Mumbai. He is the recipient of International Travel Grant award from Indian Council of Medical Research. He is also the recipient og Visiting Scientist award from Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. Dr. Adak has published more than 100 research papers in both National and International journals. He has to his credit three edited volumes and one book. He is acting as Reviewer for a number of National and International journals. Presently he is attached to the Anthropological Survey of India, Kolkata as a Research Associate (Physical). Dr. Adak has conducted field research in different States of India. His main research intersts are in the fields of Biological Anthropology and Anthropogical Demography.
