The papers in the volume deal with significant trends and development in population, labour force and employment, agriculture and irrigation, industrial development, the social sectors and environment. Commenting and analysing, the research writings raise questions on development issues with particular respect to Tamil Nadu which has emerged as one of the pioneers among states in the uplift of the weaker sections. Scrutinising a variety of data and with special reference to regions within the state and schemes for development, they discuss the declining significance of agriculture, characteristics and impact of ground water irrigation, industrial development, trend and pattern of employment, fertility decline and the changing landscape of higher education.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR A. Vaidyanathan
A. Vaidyanathan is currently Emeritus Professor at the Madras Institute of Development Studies (Chennai, India) and is a member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council. He was educated in Madras, and did his post graduation in the USA. After obtaining a Ph.D from Cornell University, he worked for 6 years (1956-62) as economist in the National Council of Applied Economic Research, New Delhi. Currently he is also Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Social Studies Trust, New Delhi.

Prof. V.K. Natraj, presently Director, Madras Institute of Development Studies, Chennai, is a graduate of the universities of Mysore and Oxford. He was professor of Development Studies and Director, Institute of Development Studies, University of Mysore. He is on the Management Committee of the Development Research Centre for the Future State at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, UK.
