In India, women and girls receive far less education than men, due both to social norms and fears of violence. The country has the largest population of non-school-going working girls. India’s constitution guarantees free primary school education for both boys and girls up to age 14. This goal has been repeatedly reconfirmed, but primary education in India is not universal. Overall, the literacy rate for women is 54.16 percent versus 65.38 percent for men, according to the census report 2001. Eradication of female illiteracy has been one of the major concerns of the government of India since independence. The government and non-governmental organisations have established a number of initiatives for the educational development of women and girls. India is rich in policies, thus almost every conceivable strategy to promote girls’ education has been covered. The problem lies in implementation. It is therefore necessary to concentrate on making the system work and deliver the services. This volume provides an overall view on issues and problems related to women’s educational development in India. It is hoped that this work will be of immense help to social scientists, policy makers, administrators, scholars and all those who concerned with women’s development.
