The Constitution of India guarantees equal opportunity to women. In fact during the Vedic period women had been given a place of pride in the society. However, of late they were not getting their due despite the Constitutional provision. The government has therefore been making special efforts to bring the women in the mainstream of development. There have been changes in the government’s approach over the years to achieve this goal. For example, it was ‘Welfare during Fifties’, ‘Development during Seventies’, and ‘Employment during Nineties’. The basic objective of the government has been to make them economically independent and self-reliant. This book makes an attempt to analyze the impact of women related programmes on their income, employment opportunities and economic empowerment. It also make an effort to measure the extent to which technological innovations and life supporting scientific devices have been helpful in reducing the drudgery of women-folk and brought about qualitative improvements in their lifestyle, perception as well as overall outlook. T he finding indicate that there has been a change in the positive direction as a result of the efforts of the government. However, there is still scope for improvement and much has still to be done if women are to be given empowerment in the true sense. The book should be useful not only to the students interested in women’s problems but also for academics as well as policy makers.
