This book provides a great deal of very relevant policy information that should be put in the hands of academicians and decisionmakers in India and elsewhere. The authors, through a case study from southern India, provide an example of how policy analysts can convert research results into appropriate policy alternatives for consideration by policymakers." The analysis of the study region is presented in five chapters. Background information (along with descriptions of the study area, surveys and samples) is given in the first chapter. The household welfare and equity situation found in the study area is described in the second chapter. The economic linkages between households and other economic entities in the study area are traced and measured, and delineated in the third chapter. Policies to help the poor are devised from the linkage analysis, the envisioned policy effects are calculated for the study area, and the results are displayed in the fourth chapter. The concluding fifth chapter contains a detailed summary of the analysis as it pertains to the main argument that the proposed methodology is a useful path to follow when devising policies to help the poor in southern India, and elsewhere.
