This book is chronicle of the steps that have been visualized and initiated by the Government of India in the recent years. It is a compilation and collation of the information made available by numerous agencies like National Institutions, Planning Commission, prominent NGOs working in the disability sector, Ministries of Health and Family Welfare and Human Resource Development. On certain occasion, it has been felt at various levels in the government and outside that adequate efforts have not been made at least to document the achievements that we have made as a society in our march towards modernity. Taking stock of our actions will enable us to know where we stand today. This book tries to highlight the enactments, policy formulation and follow up steps that have been taken by various legislations enacted from time to time in the field of medical, educational vocational, psychosocial and attitudinal rehabilitation and integration of persons with disabilities with in the society.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR J.P. Singh

J.P. Singh is presently a Reader in Sociology at Patna University, Patna and Chairman, Institute of Population and Integrated Development, Patna. He has been a UGC Teacher Fellow at the JNU, New Delhi; Research Scholar at the School of Social Sciences, the Australian National University, Canberra; Professioinal Associate at the East-West Center, University of Hawaii (USA); and Reader in Research Methodology at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Bombay. Dr. Singh has got several research papers published in leading professional journals from India and abroad and authored Patterns of Rural-Urban Migration in India.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Manoj K. Dash

Dr. Manoj K. Dash is currently working as a Director with the SOS Children’s Villages of India. Prior to that he worked as a Consultant to the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) and as a Project Evaluators of the Council for Advancement of People’s Action and Rural Technology (CAPART). Dr. Dash joined the RCI as a Research Fellow in 1999 and worked for two years. He was engaged in All India Assessment Exercise of the Integrated Education for the Disabled to RCI by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). In the last one and half years, he was involved sponsored by the UNDP, WHO and the DFID. CMDR is one of the fourteen major research institutes in India recognized and funded by the Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR). Dr. Dash also worked as a freelance ‘research monitoring and evaluation’ consultant.
