The present work of investigation has been taken up to explicate the nature and objectives of the economic development programme floated by the Central as well as the State Government of Karnataka for progress and prosperity of the country at large and for the modernization of the rural society in particular. War against poverty was one of the chief objectives of the developmental programme. The other factors of modernism are closely concerned with the social and cultural aspects of the people. This study at present is how far the Economic Rural Development programme have left their impact upon the, and in what way the people have reacted to them. It is also a part of the study to know whether the programmes are sufficient to improve the conditions of the village, or whether the initiation of the people also is responsible for the characteristic changes in the social, political and economic life of the people, so the title of the book runs as follows : "Economic Development and Structural Change in Rural India.
